Silverton Medical Rescue (SMR) is the sole pre-hospital medical provider for Silverton and San Juan County, CO. Our unofficial motto is, “Any accident, anywhere, anytime, in any conditions” – meaning our Paramedics and EMTs are specialized in avalanche rescue, high and low angle rope rescue, swiftwater rescue, and austere medicine in a remote environment.
Silverton Medical Rescue is a unique place to work, especially for those who enjoy backcountry challenges and are excited to hone/learn their technical rescue skills. Interns will typically work a 40/128-hour work week (2 consecutive days followed by 5 days off). This position offers continuing education (CEs) required to maintain paramedic licensure and technical rescue training.
Paramedic Job Responsibilities
An Intern’s responsibilities will vary by agency needs. All Interns should be prepared to –
Provide pre-hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care to the transfer of care.
Maintain thorough patient care documentation.
Examine patients and determine the nature, extent, or magnitude of illness or injury and apply emergency medical procedures.
Decide whether and how to treat and/or transport patients within SMR’s scope of practice.
Communicate with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding treatment and to arrange for reception of patients at medical treatment facilities.
Lift, carry, and transport injured, sick or incapacitated persons to medical facilities.
Administer prescribed treatment on scene or in specially equipped vehicles according to established medical protocols.
Apply splints, administer oxygen or artificial resuscitation, treat wounds and abrasions, and perform basic life support procedures.
Stabilize, immobilize, lift, and move victims from incident scenes.
Operate a specially equipped emergency medical vehicle in an assigned geographic area to respond to accidents or catastrophes and to transport injured or ill persons to a medical facility.
Inspect specially equipped emergency vehicles, clean and inventory equipment to ensure safe operation, and replenish medical supplies, fuel, and fluids.
Assist the Director and SMR staff with day-to-day administrative tasks.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Paramedic Qualifications / Skills / Training Provided
Silverton Medical Rescue has a unique set of responsibilities requiring a wide range of skills. The agency recognizes that a strong foundation in medicine, rescue, and operations (both in the office and in the field) is sufficient to commence training. Interns will possess, or be trained into the following competencies:
Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.
Effective presentation of information in one-on-one and small group situations to other medical personnel, victims, and families.
Ability to read, write, and communicate professionally and effectively with employees and managers.
Writing official correspondence or reports.
Knowledge of company protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies.
Acting as incident commander on mass casualty incidents (ICS complexity 5, 4, and 3), effectively managing teams and multiple resources to affect successful rescues in remote and backcountry settings.
Ability to use EMS data entry applications.
Ability to safely and effectively operate in and around medical and rescue aircraft.
Specific Mountain Rescue training may include the following:
Avalanche Rescue
Swiftwater Rescue
Technical Rope Rescue
Operation of backcountry 4x4s, Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs), snowmobiles, snow bikes
Incident command and operations planning
Mapping software platforms
Education, Experience, and Credentialing Requirements
The following must be shown prior to the first duty shift:
Driver’s License
Colorado Paramedic Certification and National Registry Paramedic Certification (EMT-P/NREMT-P)
AHA Basic Life Support Certification
AHA Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification
PALS Certification
Consent to a background check that includes a review of motor vehicle, criminal, civil, and certification/licensing records, including any adjudications involving moral turpitude

Working Conditions
As with any career in which work is performed both indoors and outdoors, Interns may find themselves working in potentially hazardous conditions requiring physical exertion and discomfort. The agency follows a basic principle, established by federal regulators, that the safety of providers supersedes all other considerations on any emergency call. Field work is performed in controlled conditions under strict safety protocols accompanied by appropriate knowledge, training, and leadership as a prerequisite for any and all missions. No personnel are deployed without an Operational Risk Management (ORM) plan. No personnel are permitted to enter any scene until it is deemed safe, with potential hazards being managed by fire and/or law enforcement authorities, as needed, prior to entry by medical personnel.
